History
During the 70's, Lexus' parent company, Toyota, was growing its reputation for reliability and quality in the global automotive market. The seeds of Lexus were planted in the early 1980s when Toyota executives decided to create a luxury division to compete with high-end European and American automakers. This led to the development of "Project F1," which ultimately resulted in the launch of Lexus in 1989 with the introduction of the LS 400 sedan. While Lexus itself had no presence in the 1970s, Toyota's success during this time set the foundation for its luxury brand's eventual debut.
