The 1999 Indianapolis 500 is best remembered for one of the closest finishes in IndyCar history. Rookie Kenny Bräck won the race in a dramatic photo finish, beating Scott Goodyear by just 0.043 seconds after a late restart set up a flat-out drag race to the line.
It was held during the height of the IRL–CART split, so the field lacked many traditional IndyCar stars, but the race still delivered intensity, multiple cautions, and strategic battles. Bräck’s victory was especially notable because he went from 28th on the grid to first, cementing the race as a classic despite the divided era of American open-wheel racing.
