In 1970, the Porsche 917K secured a legendary 1-2 finish at the 24 Hours of Daytona, marking its first major international victory. The winning #2 Gulf-liveried car, driven by Pedro Rodríguez and Leo Kinnunen, finished a dominant 45 laps ahead of the nearest Ferrari. This race debuted the "short-tail" (Kurzheck) design, which finally solved the dangerous high-speed instability of earlier models. Notably, driver Brian Redman was credited with finishing both first and second after filling in as a relief driver for the winning car. The team set a distance record of 2,758 miles during the event, a milestone that remained unbeaten for 17 years.
